Who can remember a TV programme in the 1950's and 60's called "What's my Line", a contestant would mime part of his work and the 4 panellists would guess what that person did as a job, the contestant could only answer yes or no.?
Well around that period I would cycle with my friends to a place called Black Bridge to watch the steam trains and collect the numbers. It was out in the countryside and up an old farm track.
In those days different regions had their own companies running the trains. In this picture the LMS (London, Midland, Scotland) region is on the left, whilst the GWR (Great Western Region) is on the right. You can see the GWR lines climbing upward towards me, and just behind me it bares off to right up the valleys and on to London. The other line with the modern train on went to Bristol and the South West.
I can remember times when on a train going to Gloucester, that if the trains came along side each other, it would end up in a race. So, there you go, a place from my childhood that brought happy memories, in fact I was always CHUFFED to go there.
Oh yes What’s My Line with Isobel Barnet, Gilbert Harding & I can’t remember the others but it was a top show in the fifties would it be?
Great reminder with your railway lines. I can remember sitting in the railway bank with pencil & pad taking down train numbers….we must have led a simple life! Those fields now are full of houses! 😨
