Well today I've put my sensible hat on, no silly notice but a lovely driveway leading to a country house. Yesterday after my visit to Tetbury Hospital, I decided to come home across-country to find a geocache.
The container was located in some ivy next to a kissing gate and I noticed a lady down the lane with several dogs running around beside her. Suddenly a black Labrador came running up the lane towards me with his tail wagging. Oh, lovely I thought and put out my hand to greet it, wrong move as the dog showed me his big teeth and growled at me. My hand went back into my pocket and fortunately the lady called the dog back to her.
I drove a bit further up the road and notice some big iron gates with this view behind it. I had come across Chavenage House which is a beautiful country mansion with some history.
It was built in 1576, that's a date not a time, for Edward Stephens who passed it on to his son and then Grandson Nathaniel. He later became a supporter of Oliver Cromwells Roundheads and Charles 1 parliament, Charles 1 also visited Chavenage House during his reign. It's said that when Nathaniel died, his ghost was seen leaving the house in a coach driven by a headless coachman dressed like the hapless king. The house is reputed to be one of the nation's most haunted homes.
Time to leave I thought, why don’t you look it up in Wikipedia and keep smiling.
Was in the Ruston area of Tacoma this afternoon and drove past a building that looked like the one shown. Its green house was in sad shape, but the rest of the grounds looked well taken care of. Oh, does the name "Weyerheauser Mansion" remind you of the lumber company is the PNW?
