Lighthouses On The Chesapeake

Our morning boat ride got back to the Stevensville marina at noon. We were informed by our amazing photo leader that our next boat would leave out of the Cambridge marina at 2, giving us time for a quick stop to eat since it would take a little over an hour by car to get to the next marina. We ended up stopping at McD's in Easton and arrived at our next bay adventure with plenty of time to spare.
After a very windy hour boat ride, we arrived at our 6th lighthouse "Solomons Lump Lighthouse". While our time on the bay in the morning was fairly calm, the winds were picking up and the waves were very noticeable. I was doing my best to watch the horizon, take deep calm breaths and eat some saltines to avoid my fear of getting seasick. This was the second lighthouse to sit on this spot. The first was a five-legged screw-pile structure like the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse that was knocked over by ice in 1893. It was decided to build a caisson structure base instead in 1895. This lighthouse originally had an octagonal wooden house around the brick tower for the light keepers. It was automated in 1950, and some years later the house was removed, leaving just the tower. This lighthouse has not been put up for auction and is still owned by the government. In 1996 it was denied being placed on the National Register of Historic Places because the “station’s integrity was compromised when the integral keeper's quarters was demolished". This functional but peculiar looking lighthouse faces an uncertain future.
What a fabulous tour you've had!!

I love all the colors that show up so well in this. It’s impressive to think and see what good shape it is in after all these years of being pounded by wind and surf. You did a remarkable job of getting a nice clean shot of it especially if it was as windy as you say. I hope you didn’t toss your cookies

Like the asymmetry of this one, and your history explaining why. Hope you didn't get seasick, though feeling queasy is not fun, either.
