Winter shadows by louannwarren

Winter shadows

This morning I read an article on the origin of bottle trees, so thought I would take a winter photo of mine. I liked the shadows. Legend has it that early Africans believed that the blue bottles lured and trapped evil spirits at night and held them captive until morning when the morning sun could destroy them. I have always preferred blue wine bottles on mine just because I think they are prettier. Little did I know that I was trapping evil spirits!

We had a bottle tree like that on Beaver Island. I like how you've caught its shadow.

I wouldn't be too devastated with old stories. But blue bottles are favoured by those who turn them into glass sculptures!

@maggiemae I was just fascinated with the legend. It’s always great to know how traditions get started. I especially liked that I have always used blue wine bottle on my tree. I did put a red bottle on it one time but the sun bleached it out in just a couple of months. @ludwigsdiana well it’s been a while but I think most of these are empty German Reisling bottles. @stray_shooter It’s made from rebar, very sturdy. Our’s was a gift but I’m sure if you Google “bottle trees” you will have your pick of designs and materials.
