This was taken in Wood River, Illinois, in the STL metro-East area. When I took this photo (2012) the Bakery had been closed for a couple of years. Based on a little internet digging, it looks like the spot is still vacant (or vacant again?). I should check it out and see...
This scene is repeated in so many rural towns. I see this bakery opened in 1920, the town was obviously doing better than it is now. It’s always sad when a long time business has to shutter. In West Texas most of the young people move to the larger cities, they don’t want to stay on the farms and ranches. Once they leave the businesses cannot survive with fewer people to purchase their goods and services.
