Tie a Yellow Ribbon round the old Oak Tree by Tony Orlando and Dawn.

Stellenbosch is called Oakktown, in Afrikaans (Eikestad) and the major old roads are all lined with oak trees which are hundreds of years old.
Or maybe more fitting to these old oak trees is the song that is the true origin of the yellow ribbon - there's a song that dates back to the either American Revolution (1776) or Civil War (1865), can't remember which because I originally researched this in 1990. The song goes, "In her hair she wore a yellow ribbon. She wore it in the springtime in the merry month of May. And if you asked her why she wore it, she wore it for her soldier who was far, far away. Far away. Far away. She wore it for her soldier who was far, far away." But, few people know that song. I only recognized it when I did the research because it is one of the military cadences that the soldiers do when they march.
@homeschoolmom Yes that's ringing bells with me although I had never connected it to the modern song. Great picture @luwigsdiana, I now have that going round my head all day!
@homeschoolmom know that song too! Love those old songs. The Yellow Ribbon on the Oak tree was always the one I wanted to hear on the Listeners Request on Sunday radio when I was little!
@homeschoolmom Having grown up in the south I do know that song and sang it as I read it - only in my head, mind you, as Kirby would not have liked to hear me!
@homeschoolmom Thanks for the info Lisa, I have never heard that one before, but will check it out :-) @suzanne234 Thanks for the tip Suzanne, I have been battling to get it right. Hope the next one is ;-)
(If you put the link in the description rather then the title it should work Diana)
