A mother and her calf in Walker Bay at Hermanus. Every year between June and December, hundreds of Southern Right Whales congregate in the sheltered shallow waters here, to mate and calve their young. Hermanus is SA's whale watching capital. On the spur of the moment I decided to go there. It is about 78 kms (48 miles) from where we live. I went on my own as hubby was not interested, and took a whale watching tour. Unfortunately there where only all the mums and their calves. No breaching or tail fins to be seen. It was so special to be able to watch them.
How exciting! You live in such a wonderful area to have access to whales, penguins, zebras, giraffes! It is amazing to me to have all those different kinds of animals so close to you living actually in the wild! This is a fabulous photo of these whales! I love the color of that water too.
@robz@cwbill They come as close to the shore as they feel they can whilst being safe from predators. It is obviously also better for the calf in shallow water ;-)
