This is one of the figures on the large bronze sculpture in the Oamaru Public Gardens called the Peter Pan. The two children, Michael and Wendy are at the top so I would imagine this is Peter Pan. I don't remember him playing the pipes though. They are actually called Pan flutes so I presume this is right!
there may have been some confusion in the sculptor's mind here. J M Barrie's literary masterpiece was certainly named after the mythological Pan who played the pipes (or flutes), but I don't recall him doing so in the story, and the "official" statue in Kensington Gardens shows him blowing a slender horn-shaped instrument.
I like the softness of your photo; it suits the subject.
@wordpixman You might be right, Arthur, I was just putting this figure into the figure of Peter Pan but I can't find out. The sculptor was Thomas Clapperton, a pupil of Sir George Frampton who was from England. At the top of the statue are Michael and Wendy (John is not there) But this particular sculpture might be based on the original Greek god, Pan!
Gorgeous - I'd love to see this! (*adds NZ to travel wish list*) Not exactly the way I imagine Peter but would love to see the sculpture in its entirety.
