This is a photo from my mother's album of her journey throughout the world. In 1929 she, aged 24, sailed to England with her sister, bought a Morris Oxford car and they drove around Britain exploring castles and cathedrals. I have her diaries and am currently typing them into a manuscript. I have typed over 42000 words so far and she has just got to Oxford. While in Stratford she visited here and this is probably either her or her sister standing here. Snippets of her diary are posted here on my 365 album.
I am really interested if anyone would know what sort of camera would be available in 1929?
That was actually quite a brave under taking for 2 sisters in 1929! The trip over would have wonderful. Have enjoyed reading your journal of her journal.
very beautiful photo Maggiemae i Googled the Camera for you it would have been a twin reflected lense camera being a small lense at the top and a big lense at the bottom it also looks a bit like the brownie box camera
@jantan I think this was Warwick Castle "A very drawly guide told us all about it, then he pushed me up the stairs and we viewed the Castle which, after a little difficulty, we found admission to be 2/- but its worth it. The grounds are beautiful. They are very nice looking men with bears on their hats, to show you the way and there are no gratuities. A handsome tho’ elderly guide showed us and 48 more people all around but I can’t remember all we saw. The castle is clean and well preserved and parts have been added. The most interesting parts:
1 Pictures: Original Henry VIII Holbein
Lots by Rubens and Van Dyke
One stated by Holbein or Rubens and completed by Sir Joshua Reynolds
2 Blue Room Lovely satin, very faded. Queen Anne’s Room, Music Room
3. Old black and dented Camellian [unknown, could be horse]Armour, Cromwell’s helmet, Squared toed boot, chain armour – Indian. Lots of Tudor armour including a dwarf suit. Pistols, guns, sword
4. Magnificent furniture, Tortoiseshell ? Royal Room – chairs, Lovely chandeliers, candelabra. But there were perfect views from the windows.
5 The beautiful Greek vase in the Conservatory specially built for it. The peacocks. The vase holds 163 gals and was found in 1770 in the bed of a lakelet near Tivoli where Hadrian had a villa. Attributed to Lysippos IV cent BC.
Definitely. The paintings and most of the other artifacts are still there to my knowledge. I used to work in the restaurant there when I came home in my university holidays. The peacocks, which are still very much in evidence occasionally used to make an appearance in the restaurant (alive - not on the menu I hasten to add!)
My other son (Sam) goes to school in warwick about 150 metres from the castle. Here is a link to a pic of him playing in his school band in the grounds. http://365project.org/jantan/other-stuff/2012-06-12
@jantan those photos are just so good, thank you Jan! Mum paid 2 shillings to get in here! We were working it out - about 20 pounds now! But it looks like more from the comments!
@maggiemae
I saw Warwick Castle around 15 years ago with my cousin Derek who lives in Birmingham. It's very well preserved but lacks the rugged magic of Conway and other castles in ruins. Maybe it's my age but I'm drawn to ruins! They speak to me.

And a shot I took earlier in the year where the commentary confirms that it is still considered an expensive day out.
