This is NOT pyracantha - it is Nandina, an invasive species from China

It may be a familiar scene in my album - the fence and one of my bluebird houses, but the Nandina (also known as Heavenly Bamboo or Sacred Bamboo) is dressing for fall. The berries are almost bright red now. I posted a black and white version back in September here - https://365project.org/marlboromaam/challenges-and/2020-09-24 Where the berries were just barely bronze then. It is from China and an invasive species in the USA.

More about Nandina here - http://namethatplant.net/plantdetail.shtml?plant=966

Nine years ago today - https://365project.org/marlboromaam/365/2011-10-23
We call them pyracantha maggie , the deep red berry variety being known as " firethorn".

What a lovely garden you have maggie. Does it need a lot of loving care and attention ?

@phil_howcroft I have pyracantha growing on the opposite side of the fence. I promise you this is nandina. It has no thorns. My pyracantha has big hulking thorns. This is an invasive species from China. LOL! Thanks, Phil! I wish it was lovely - it used to be nine years ago.

@joysabin This is nandina, an invasive species from China. I have pyracantha on the opposite side of my fence with big hulking thorns and very red berries.

Lovely birdhouse topping this bush. The berries look nice.

Looking at it I can see the similarity with pyracantha but must be a real nuisance if it is invasive. Cute little bird box.

Invasive but beautiful at least!

@linnypinny Thanks, Lin!

I see that it has pointed leaves, and looks more like a creeper. whereas pyracantha has rounded ends to the leaves and is very thorny. Otherwise very similar! It's a shame it has to be so invasive.

Wonderful composition

@janturnbull You know your pyracantha, Janet! This one came up wild. I guess like the balsam in the UK, it crowds out native species.
