Best on black I have no idea what these Red Spotted Purple Butterflies had found on the road - there were actually 4 of them working over whatever that was. Still trying to get to the picnic area!
@markp Actually neither. We've had continual light rains every week (mowing all through the summer isn't common in Arkansas) and the temperatures were in the 70's as it was up on the mountain (or mountains as they go in Arkansas!)
@milaniet I was quite curious when I saw this shot, so had a quick search to see what I could find about them. Quite a choice of foodstuffs for both caterpillars and adults, but on one site I found it mentioned adults had been seen on dung. So it looks like your beautiful butterflies are not that bothered about what they eat
