I have spent a lot of time reading my camera's manual this week. I have spent a lot of time reading the great tutorials some folks are putting together on 365 (like the Brand New & Revised Camera Settings Challenge) and I have come to the conclusion that I learn much better in a classroom situation! I am not good at teaching myself after reading a few paragraphs no matter how well they are written! But still, I'd rather try and not "get it" than not try at all! At least trying does help you to get familiar with how your camera works, even if you can't get it to do what you want! I was trying to work with the "Fast Shutter Speed" parameters that were given on the Camera Settings post this week, but I'm not sure I got it according to what they suggested. Nonetheless I did manage to capture a shot where movement was frozen in motion. After I uploaded it, processed it and posted it here I realized I'd had the camera on a tripod. Oh well, back to the drawing board- I think the shot was supposed to be hand-held!
Super capture, love how you have caught the movement. I must re-read the camera settings challenge as I don't remember whether you should do everything handheld or whether using a tripod was okay. I know the previous challenge was handheld.
I agree, there is a lot to read on the site at the moment, and then to find time to try it! I'm stuck in the textures thingy, haven't even looked at the camera settings one.
You did a great job at freezing the motion! And for you learning, it doesn't matter if it was on a tripod or not, you practised with different shutterspeeds and that is what its all about!
I don't have time to read all the wonderful things but I do like doing it from a written tutorial because I can try things as I read them. Like this catch. See your bird picture is backed by snow like mine.
You seem to be better at teaching yourself than what you give yourself credit for, this is a well composed shot and you have frozen the motion very well.
great capture Ann. I find it helps, especially with a new camera, to sit down with the manual and the camera, and try some of the things in the manual. If it's something I really want to learn, I'll do it several times and then come back to it a few weeks later.
Great shot of the bird, beautiful captured. My problem is I can read it but a lot of words I do n`t know the meaning of. ( even in my own language) Life get increase of difficult`s .
Thank you very much for you visit , you nice lines and the sympathy on my surgery and recover,. Much appreciated.
@dibzgreasley Thanks Debs! I think one challenge at a time is perfectly fine!
@cimes1@alia_801 Thank you Carole! Thank you Alia! Yes, I've looked at some tutorials on YouTube- not so much for learning about the camera, but for shooting certain kinds of pictures. They were pretty helpful. I didn't keep up so well with the ones about the camera. That's just me and the way I learn. I like interaction with the teacher. I ask a lot of questions!! @nicoleterheide@thresheg@joansmor Thank you Nicole, Graham and Joan! Yes, Joan some snow now and more on the way!
@bill_fe Thanks Bill! I have a tough time fully understanding the manual. Sometimes it's just a matter of not understanding the terms, but I'm going to take a few classes at the camera store and there is a gal in the camera club that's going to take me under her wing too. That will probably get me where I need to be. I'm looking forward to it.
@maggiemae@radiogirl@pyrrhula Thank you Maggie (Ithink we all battle that at times), Kathy and Pyrrhula (I have a little trouble with the terms too- but I try to stick with it and sometimes I can figure it out)!
Thank you so much everybody! I am so encouraged by your support. I'll keep trying- it's good for the brain cells! And a special thanks to all o you who fav'd this picture. It's sooooooo appreciated!
Ann H. LeFevre No. before this happen we have closed the Oosterschelde keering . A big dam with open spaces to let the sea water get in and out that can be closed by big doors on the entrance of this inlet See my pic.`on ( and the next one): http://365project.org/pyrrhula/365/2011-07-29
@gratefulness When I saw the instructions I knew the birdfeeder would be the place to try and catch the shot. I probably will not keep up with this challenge as it takes me so much time to try and figure it out on my camera. But I want to take a couple classes from the camera store and that will get me to where I want to be with the camera's abilities. And mine too! With Flash of Red starting up I just had to do better with the time management!
@pyrrhula Thank you Pyrrhula! That was very interesting. There are a few VERY SMALL flood control gates on some of the creeks and rivers near me but nothing that size. It obviously is a necessity for your country!
@bruni Thanks Bruni! I am amazed at how quickly they find other places to feed when I'm unable to put the feeder out. And how quickly they come back when I do. Thanks for the fav!

My post is up with thoughts about the first week for the book club. Wasn't sure when you were planning to put up the first week's discussion: http://www.boostyourphotography.com/2015/01/bw-bookclub.html
