@summerfield Thanks Vikki and thanks so much for the fav. I'm pretty excited about this one because I got so close! I've been using the t3i pretty regularly too- but the zoom on the powershot is the best for the birds.
A great capture of this lovely guy. Thank you for your rather long but very interesting comment on my shot of yesterday. Who would think of shooting this beautiful creature if not a madman with a gun.
Is this a purple finch or a house finch. I was identifying the ones at my feeder as purple finches but studying the differences as they describe on line I decided I had house finches. Nice capture either way.
He's so pretty!!! Love his stripes and dark red head!!! I think he was flirting with you...and in front of his mate?? LOL Great details and lighting!! FAV!
Thank you Vikki, Kerri, Ann, Lee-Ann, Colleen, Dione, Graham, Kathy, Sue, and Robyn for your favs! It was exciting to see Mr. Finch on the PP thanks to you!
And thanks to all of you too! I was excited to capture several great shots of him- but as some of you noted, this one with him staring at me, really catches your attention.
@quietpurplehaze LOL Hazel- I agree with you. I'm pretty sure a man gave him that name because most women always point out it's red! Actually it's more like fuschia which is a reddish/purple hue.
@joansmor The House Finch and Purple Finch are very similar but upon close inspection you can learn the differences. The House Finch is more sparrow-like in its markings. The head and breast of the HF are what is red- and it is more red. His wings are brown with white markings and the underbelly is striped. The female's wings and underbelly are much like the male's. Her head is also striped like her underbelly and it has hint of red in it. The Purple Finch is more finch-like (as in Goldfinch). The female looks similar to the HF female but there is no red tint on her markings and she has a white eye stripe. The male PF has not only a red head, he has red on his breast and all down his back and on the tail (which you can't see in this shot because he's looking straight on). I always have to double check when I'm posting the shot because they can be easily confused!
@sangwann Oh my Dione- it was way too long! After I hit "post comment" I regretted not editing it a bit! But I figured you'd skip over it if you didn't want to read it! This bird is very tiny- I don't think he's in any danger of being hunted. But pheasants, turkeys and quail are hunted in fields around here.

@yaorenliu Thank you Yao! Some might argue that he is red- but someone else named him purple.
Thank you for the favs Ann and Lorraine!
Thank you Colleen, Alia, Bill, Carole and Sandi! One of my best bird shots I think!
Thank you so much for your favs Bill and Carole!
Thanks Lynn!
Thanks Mark!
