This week's 52 week challenge assignment was to shoot a photo inspired by the land. It was up to the photographer as to whether they wanted to be literal or not, shoot a landscape or just shoot the land. It's been raining and dreary all week. We're in the middle of winter so there is very little color to find- i. e. it's been an uninspiring week for land shots or landscapes! So I started thinking about other ways to speak about the land and the way people think about it around here. We are in an area of contrasts. Some people have lived here all their lives, others are transplants like me. Some people wish to keep this region in a more natural state so we have plenty of wildlife areas and state parks. Others (particularly those who've moved here from NYC) want more stores and restaurants closer to home so there's a lot of development going on as well. This means there are a lot of lots for sale too. At the moment any more development just means more traffic to me and I don't think that's a good idea at all!
Thank you for the story that follows this beautiful capture. When I was a youth the population of the Maltese Islands was around 330,000. Today it has reached half a million and increasing, so you can imagine what most of us are going through with traffic around every corner and arable land encroachment taking place everywhere.
Great idea for the challenge. Round here, most people are just interested in upping the housing density, so single houses on large blocks are being knocked down so multiple houses can be built, or multiple blocks are turned into huge apartment buildings. And lots of the green land between suburbs is quickly disappearing under concrete :(
Thank you Katy, Dione, Francoise, Peter, Henri, Chris, Alia, Suse, Brian, Sharon and Diane! I enjoyed reading your responses- seems we are not very different from other places around the world. I don't know if that should be comforting or not, but at least I know you understand!
