I am often hesitant to try these artist challenges because I am concerned my camera cannot rise to the occasion and match the style of the artist. But I thought the current artist challenge might be something not beyond my camera's ability but outside of what I usually do artistically- a definite change of pace.
The artist featured this time is Thawan Duchanee, a well-known and iconic fixture in Thailand and Southeast Asia. He has a strong, bold, masculine style often featuring tigers and elephants and usually in two prominent colors, red and black. I was intrigued by the overlay and embedded designs within his subjects- a far more intricate and delicate version of those "pictures hidden within a picture" puzzles of my childhood. His work, style and subject matter are decidedly Asian. And although I have one or two Asian mementos given as gifts from others who have traveled in that region of the world, I do not own the kind of piece that would normally be painted by Mr. Duchanee.
My attempt here has been to capture the spirit of his style- that is the bold colors of black and red, with an intricate overlay within the picture. I used a glass lawn ornament (the face) as my base picture, processed it in the watercolor application in BeFunky, over-layed the tropical/Asian flowers in red and applied a black border. I then transferred the shot to iPiccy and blended in the lacy pattern by overlaying a black and white picture as a texture on to the picture of the face. I hope I have accomplished the same intensity of Duchanee's work in this piece.
Oh, Ann. . .here is what I think is amazing: through this incredible shot and your explanation, you've piqued my interest to go and study the artist. I can't think of a better compliment than that! (except fav)
@groovygirlrn Thank you Sheri. He works predominantly in red and black, two colors I think look great together. @httpgeffed Thank you Colleen! @allie912 Thank you so much Allison! And thank you for the fav! This was the first time in a long time that I had a definite way I wanted the photo to appear. I'm a very pleased with it. @pandorasecho Thanks Dixie- the fellow who's in charge of the challenge also posted a link to his artwork page. If you look it up under themes the artist challenge should still be there.
@lyno Wow, thanks Lyn! He's a fascinating artist- certainly not my preference in my home, but I know I'd be staring at the picture in a gallery quite some time before I moved on to the next one. You'll see what I mean when you look at his pictures. And thank you so much for the fav!
Wow!!! This is so pretty!! I need to take a class from you for sure!! How much do you charge??? I'm really inspired! I have another artist of yours to check out. :-)
@vposey Thank you Vickie! My classes are free! lol You are free to wander through all the free processing sites and freely experiment with anything! And then you are free to post the results if you want to! Seriously, I'm no expert on processing- but I do love to experiment with it. I had never heard of this artist before he was chosen for the challenge by @nod who is hosting it this time.
