I always know when I go away that the old saying will be true: when the cat's away, the mice will play. In this case- when Ann's away, the deer and squirrels will raid the bird feeder! Rather than withhold the seeds from my little feathered friends, I accept the fact that I will not be able to bring the feeder in each night and a little more seed than usual will be consumed. But I didn't expect to come home and find the top of the feeder screwed off and the squirrel literally INSIDE the feeder! haha! It was an amusing sight to say the least! So here's one of my little acrobats having one last go at the seeds before I went out and took the feeder down. Who knows how many days they were gorging themselves- but it is a thing of the past now. I re-tightened the lid, refilled the feeder and greased the pole with Vaseline to re-educate my little gray-haired friends that the feeder is really not meant for them. They get seed on the ground instead.

@sarasdadandmom I thought of you the moment I saw the lid on the ground and the squirrel IN the feeder! Thanks Terry! @kerristephens Thanks Kerri! @fullcircle Thanks Cindy! @salza Thanks Sally! They really love it when I'm out of town because most of the time they can't get to this one! @sangwann Thanks Dione! I think I have actually heard of folks training them. I'm always tempted when the babies come to "make friends" with them so that they'll come get the seeds from me- but I think it's better to let nature stay natural. This way they still know how to look for seeds in the woods too. @nicolecampbell Thanks Nicole! Or a sore tummy from too many seeds! @digitalrn Thanks Rick! Yes- he was the first one I thought of when I saw him in the feeder!
What a hoot! For the longest time I studied this picture and couldn't shake the sense that it was a man in a fur suit standing up. But for the life of me, I couldn't find his head!. A great capture and a salute to a very tricky rodent.
Thank you Carla, Allison, Henri and Jennifer! I sure do wish the one I took of him totally pigging out INSIDE the feeder came out better, but you just couldn't really tell what he was doing. We're back to normal today- the squirrels are feeding on the ground like they used to- but I have to admit, it was fun to see this for a short time.
@alia_801 Thanks Alia! Most of the time they annoy me! But coming home after a few days away, I expect them to have figured out some form of stealing the seeds. I was really surprised they'd figured out how to get the top off. It was a bit loose, but you still had to twist it to make it come off.
@kerristephens Thanks Kerri!
