Agape 1978

What a great group of friends I had in my undergrad days! We came from all kinds of backgrounds, and in all shapes and sizes. Some were bold as brass; others shy as a bunny rabbit. But we really had a lot of fun together and grew a lot in faith and love.

One time we decided to have a picnic. Two of the teaching students had an apartment in town (small college in a wonderfully small town!) and we could use the yard for a cook out. I volunteered to make the potato salad claiming my mother's recipe was "the best"! I called her up and got the recipe. The day before the picnic I went down to the church (which was right across from the college and affiliated with it) and used the kitchen to mix up all the ingredients and store it in the frig overnight.

The next day I picked it up, added in the finishing touches and brought it over to my friends' apartment. But something did not look right. However, everyone dug in and said nothing but praises. "Wow, this really is some of the best potato salad I've ever had!" "This is great!" "Well, it lives up to your bragging! Can I have some more?" But, it not only did not LOOK right, it did not TASTE right to me. But I thanked them and was pleased to see that most of it was gone by the end of our picnic. Still, it just did not LOOK right, so when no one was looking, I threw it out.

When I returned to my dorm room, I decided to give Mom a call. I told her how everyone loved the potato salad. "But Mom, it just didn't look like yours and it didn't taste like yours. In fact it looked like the potatoes turned brown!" There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone and then my mother said,

"Did you cook the potatoes?"

Oh, you have to cook the potatoes???!!!
bahahahaha! that was precious, ann! by the way, i picked you out right away! :-)

That is such a funny story. I guess you learned a lesson that day. So I am guessing that your friends either did not know much about potato Salad or they were just being polite with their comments. Great group shot and those collage days must have great memories attached to them. I know we both made lifetime friends when we were in collage

@summerfield Thanks Vikki!
@bkbinthecity Thanks Brian! I really don't think they noticed. They were too hungry!
@fullcircle Thank you Cindy! I laugh about this and a few other times I tried to duplicate my mother's cooking. Sometimes she'd alter a recipe but not make a notation that she had so when I'd go to make it myself...well let's just say there were a few surprises!
@kerristephens Thank you Kerri!
@taffy Thank you Taffy! You should hear the one about the Spaghetti Sauce!
@cashew Thanks Kathy! I knew you'd get a kick out of this. Yes, I did peel them- boy that would have made the story doubly funny!
@maggiemae Thanks Maggie! I've got several funny stories about cooking- and only one of them is not about me!
@dibzgreasley Thanks Debs! Well, I always cook my potatoes! But yes, I've got the recipe down pat now!
@sarasdadandmom Thanks Terry!
@wordpixman Thank you Arthur!
@digitalrn Thank you Rick!
@pyrrhula Thank you Pyrrhula!
@vesna0210 Thank you Vesna! Oh, yes, always cook your potatoes!

I love this. I made friends like that is college too but when I churned a huge vat of peach ice cream and the salt water leaked in and made it super salty. They let me know. Loudly.

@pandorasecho Thank you Dixie! Oh, I'm sorry to hear the peach ice cream was too salty but looking back they were not kidding or being nice. They really liked it that way!

Great photo, Ann and what a funny story! I never make anything from scratch. I did once when I was a teenager and wound up making a dog ill from feeding him what nobody wanted to eat. lol

I've heard that if you close your eyes and plug your nose you can't tell the difference between a bite of raw apple or raw potato. Texture and starchiness are the same
September 24th, 2014
@prttblues Thanks Bev! Well, I'm happy to say no one got sick on the potato salad even though the potatoes were raw!
@pandorasecho Hmmm...not sure I really want to test that out!
