This is not my photo- so please don't comment on it. Carey was looking for suggestions on how to improve her picture. This is what I'd suggest:
1. Straighten the horizon.
2. Crop the photo keeping in mind the rule of thirds. I decided to give more space to the sky because the clouds were so pretty. I kept the curved line of the river- it was a nice organic leading line.
3. I bumped up the contrast to bring out the clouds, which also gave the landscape a slight silhouette.
4. Adjusted the vibrance to enhance the sunset.
You could also take the time to clone out the telephone wires (which I probably would have done were it my shot) but in a way they too act as a leading line so it's not terrible if you leave them in.
These were quick, easy and basic editing steps that took no more then 10 minutes. Most processing programs have all these adjustments and some cell phone cameras have them built in the camera.
Any questions, feel free to ask! I hope you feel I've improved it to your liking. It's a good shot imho!
Excellent editing. This quality of advice and output of ideas, especially when you see the before and after of this lovely photograph, is incredibly helpful. It's amazing what even just a crop and a horizon straightening can do to an image.
