Tawny Frogmouth  by onewing

Tawny Frogmouth

A few nights ago, about midnight, I was lying in bed just about to go to sleep, when I heard this strange sound from outside our bedroom window. The next day I spotted the tawny frogmouth in one of our trees.

This is the sound it makes.

I thought it was a wood carving. I love it!

Certainly not the prettiest of birds but a great capture.

Awww...he doesn't even look real. Awesome capture! What a fascinating creature!

Oh my, he is gorgeous. Do I look like the branch, they are masters of disguise :-)

Great capture. They sort of hoot like an owl, don't they?! We used to have them in Sydney. I always thought they looked like a fat hairy kookaburra!

@munkoyey Thanks Curtis.

@annied I agree Annie they are gorgeous. Unfortunately, one died in our garden a few months ago, I think it was the victim of a storm, but it is now buried in the garden under a blackbutt tree.

@annepann Thanks Anna. Glad I am educating you about our Aussie birds.

@yaorenliu He was sitting so still I think he was hoping I hadn't spotted him.
@ourrube @chimfa Thanks so much.

@iwatts He certainly looks scruffy doesn't he.

@sunraye @hermann He does look a bit of a character. Whenever David or I are trying to avoid something or someone, we say "Make a noise like a tree" as a joke. I think this is what this bird is doing, hoping I can't see him!!!

@888rachel They do sort of hoot like an owl, strange noise. Ha ha they do look a bit like a fat hairy kookaburra, a touch on the scruffy side too!!

@tracelee Thanks Tracey

@huvesaker He does doesn't he.

@joeyc He is a strange bird isn't he.

@paulaw Thanks Paula. I think he looks a bit better with his eyes open, but as it was daytime and he is a night bird he was probably a bit tired.

This is very nice!! He / She looks so fluffy :)

Oh how lucky are you!! Fabulous capture I have always wanted to see owls in the wild, even if it is in someone's back yard. Great shot.
February 21st, 2014
@elaine55 Thanks Elaine. I don't think Tawny Frogmouth's are owls, I think they are related though. We do get Boobooks here too though and they are owls. We have one which sits in one of our trees and makes a really repetative "boo book" sound all night long!!!

We are so lucky to get so many different birds here.

In my bird book they come under Frogmouths in Nocturnal Birds, my mistake.

Great shot Babs. And I now realisethat we haven't seen one around here for a while. I will have to start looking out for them.

Lee
Great shot Babs. Looks brilliant to me.
February 26th, 2014
@terryliv Thanks so much. He was here for a few days, but has now flown off to pastures new.

@gamelee Thanks Lee. I think this one was having a sleep as they are nocturnal birds.

@cathy366 Thanks Cathy. We are so lucky here to have a great range of birds. Most are in our garden, but others are still in our close neighbourhood.
