Coal Scoop by onewing

Coal Scoop

Today's Newcastle photo was taken on our guided tour of Port Waratah Coal Services at Kooragang Island.

If anyone is ever in the Newcastle area it is a brilliant day out, very informative and more to the point 'free'.

We were given a Power Point presentation and then were taken in one of their vehicles around the site.

This is the hopper that stores the coal when the trains bring it down from the mines in the Hunter Valley. This machine then digs the coal out to send it to the ships.

The picture was taken from within the tracks which the machine runs along. Above us was the conveyor belt which takes the coal to the ships.

This looks like a nasty piece of equipment. I remember going into a coal mine in Cape Breton years ago.
