2015 12 21 Sigma 10MM

I have been thinking of buying a new wide angle lens for my Chicago trip as Architecture is going to play a big part of my photography time there I am sure. I have been checking out the Canon 11-24mm and reading lots of reviews. I noticed that everyone says how heavy the lens is. It does get great reviews.

I remembered I had a Sigma WA 10-20mm lens which I have had for years but never really used as I don't do many architectural shots. I took a few shots this evening just sitting at my desk and was amazed at the vignetting at both ends of the lens. This shot is at 10mm.
My question is: do you get this kind of vignetting on all WA lenses and then have to crop?
Will this lens be ok for Chicago or should I get the Canon lens?
Uploaded for my extras album
@taffy I found my Sigma WA lens and did some test shots. I was surprised at the vignetting.

Pam, I've got the Canon 10-18mm WA and as far as my uneducated eye can tell, it displays no vignetting at all. When I was researching WA, the 10-18 seemed to get the best reviews.

@terryliv I will check that one out Terry thanks. I am wondering if I have got this effect because I am putting it on a full frame camera. I bought it when I was using a 350D.

Could well be. It does seem extremely extreme doesn't it

Anyway, serves you right for having a 5D MkIII :-(

@terryliv lol!

I like to manipulate vignetting so wouldn't use this. It does frame the picture beautifully!

Yes, this looks like it's a DX lens on an FX frame camera.

BTW, you would not have any vignetting on a good WA lens that fits your camera sensor. So this is definitely not 'fitting' -- no vignetting should occur at all.

@taffy looks like I need a new lens then! What a shame! Lol!

Just answering your post on Kim's thread about the weight of my Canon 10-22 mm wide lens ... I don't find it very heavy, but I guess it's what you're used to - it's the only wide angle I've ever owned. I weighed it and it weighs 425 g with cap and cover. I notice in advertising it says it weighs 385 g so maybe they've lightened it up a bit - mine must be fairly old as I've had it about 3 years and it was second hand when I got it. Also, I have a crop sensor camera, and don't experience any of your vignetting issues. Good luck with your new purchase - I'd love to know what you go for!

@jamibann thanks for the info Issi. If I am just taking one lens out with me weight isn't an issue as my most used lens is the 100-400mm which is a big boy! I am just thinking about my Chicago trip next year when I will probably have extra lenses in my camera bag. Gone are the days when I could carry the kitchen sink around with me! Lol!

@jamibann no I am not taking the "big boy" with me to Chicago! Architectural shots is something new to me and I am looking forward to going out with Taffy @taffy and hoping to learn a lot!

I have a wide angle adaptor and it does this but lightroom usually clean it up.

@pamknowler Lucky girl, you will have a fab time in Chicago, I'm sure, and meeting up with Taffy will be very exciting! Glad you're not taking the big boy - he is rather big! I have to say that when I'm forced to choose, say two lenses (in a city in particular) I'd always grab the wide angle and my Canon 28-135 (which is very heavy), despite my desire to have a macro and a zoom lens with me too! I carried all 4 lenses to Thailand recently, and really only used my main two. I've also become quite good at taking only my Canon G16 Powershot on certain occasions, which does take great shots and allows a certain amount of creativity, BUT frustrates me as it just doesn't feel like 'proper' photography! Anyway, whatever you take and whatever you do, enjoy it!

@jamibann I will be taking my little Panasonic Lumix with me as that slips in my pocket. I once went on a photography course to Skomer Island for Puffins. I took everything that the Pro photographer suggested and was like the bag lady!! I only used one lens - no tripod or bean bag - all hand held. I learnt a good lesson that day - do not take the kitchen sink with you as you will never use it all!! LOL!!

Had to share -- I had the opportunity to buy some equipment with some end of year available funds and am thrilled, as I bought the Thunderbolt display, keyboard, and mouse/trackpad that I'd recommended to you. I love it!!!! Did my first work with it tonight -- set up was fairly quick and easy (had to update to new operating system which took a bit of time, but all is working now. Whew...what if I hadn't liked it after recommending it to you????

@taffy it really is great isn't it Taffy! I love having LR full screen! I haven't got the trackback just the mouse -,is it worth getting? I seem to be getting on ok with MR but PS is another matter! Everything is different to my very old version of PS and I am struggling to do anything in PS. I am liking the Nik suite and will buy the full version. I still need to buy the backup storage and get that set up. Just a bit busy at the moment so these things will have to wait until after the holidays. I will try to get some training booked in the New Year.
