Nottingham Skyline by phil_howcroft

Nottingham Skyline

A strange Sunday morning in the Howcroft household.

Friends on here will know we like 'musicals' in our house.

We've seen the West End stage production of Les Misérables several times in the West End and also saw it in Birmingham when it did a UK tour a couple of years ago.

We've been keen to see the film interpretation of our fave show. Today at 8am my wife said lets go and see it at the cinema in Nottingham, there's a 10 am show !

So up we got....a snow walk for Ruby...a slippery walk down the hill for the No. 58 bus into Nottingham and we were at the cinema for 9.30 am.

This is the view through the window of 'corner house' building (cineworld is in the building) at 9.30 am this morning.

The dome dominating the landscape is the Council House dome....standing 200 feet above ground level it dominates the skyline. The dome houses the council house clock and 'Little John', a ten-and-a-half ton striking bell which is reputed to have the deepest tone in the country.

As for Les Misérables the film.....it lived up to all the hype in the press.....not everyone in the cast had a West End / Broadway voice but it was still a real emotional roller coaster ...my bottom lip quivered a few time and it was hard not to hold back the tears at the end....I actually clapped after "One Day More"......not quite cinema etiquette, but this was my first visit to a cinema in 20+ years....I think the last time i visited was to see "101 dalmatians with my daughters"

This is beautiful Phil!! Lovely details.

Quite a different view than I have here and I love it! Thanks for the Les Mis review! I am glad you both enjoyed it. I, unlike you, did NOT hold back the tears. I think it was three or four different spots for me. Say hi to the Rubester and give her a pat on the head for me.

I have never known anyone go to the cinema at that time of the morning except Saturday morning cinema for kids, I bet it was quite an adventure!!!!! I saw the trailer for Les Mis in NZ, we went twice to the Lovies while there & I thought the film version looked dramatic!
love your roof line in Nottingham, great domes & spires!

Nice view, and I agree about the film - it was excellent. I thought the story came across better than on the stage.

Lovely photo, Phil.
I've not seen the film yet. I have to wait til it's on dvd cos I know I'll cry almost all the way through. I'm glad they don't have 'Broadway voices'. From the clips I've seen the film version is a lot more close up and personal and I think they've chosen the right voices :)

Did you read this review - made me chuckle :)

Went to the movies with the wife. We saw this obscure movie I had never heard of, some French foreign film. They must have been giving away free tickets because the lines were out the door. Anyway, the movie starts and Wolverine is singing his guts out. then Catwoman starts crying and singing and it's all very moving. The only problem was, the girl next to me, who had apparently read the book or something, starts singing along. it was very distracting. so Wolverine is on the run from the Gladiator because Catwoman had a baby at Borat's house, but now she wants Wolverine to care for her. Time skip. A bunch of kids get shot, and in the end everyone dies. Four stars.
