50mm Lens Replaced by phil_howcroft

50mm Lens Replaced

My 50mm lens that cracked when Ruby knocked my camera off the settee / sofa has been replaced.

I was surprised that the UV filter and lens hood from my previous 50mm lens didn't fit. Canon must have changed the spec, as the thread on the new camera is 49mm whereas it was 52mm on my other camera.

I had a 49mm Skylight filter that sat on my old Olympus OM10D SLR, but apparently film skylight filters are no good for DSLR's as they can cause colour casts under certain curcumstances.

I can see some fluff on the glass and lens so I need to get a UV filter as it offers a bit of protection and is easier to clean than doing the lens glass directly.

Caring for a camera is a real investment in time and money!

Watch out, strangers! You've now got me thinking about UV filters - always something to think about!

I checked my lens EF 50 mm 1:1.8 II (52) mm. I bought, it must be more than 4 years ago.

Glad you have a new lens. How weird that it is 49mm .... just checked mine which is from the summer and that is a 52mm.:)

Glad to hear you have a new 50mm as it is obviously a fav.

Glad you got yourself a replacement - losing a much loved piece of equipment is like losing a friend.
My 1.4 is 58mm in diameter. Guess that might be explained away by the slightly wider aperture - needing iris blades that open wider?

@sabresun thanks matt :)

@sangwann cheers dione, i hope to get some more portraits with it :)

@nickspicsnz well i cannot really blame ruby, all down to me nick :)

@quietpurplehaze some say putting an extra bit of glass in front of your lens glass detracts from the engineering and effects picture quality. Far better to scratch a filter than your lens glass :)

@phil_howcroft

I understand both povs but have just realised that my 50mm has a lens hood which must give some protection.

yay!
As for filters - I have one on mine all the time as I am rather heavy handed and carefree - I need protection lol
