100 Strangers : Round 3 : No. 247 : Kate by phil_howcroft

100 Strangers : Round 3 : No. 247 : Kate

On Saturday when we went into Nottingham, I captured three strangers for my project. My route back from Sneinton market (where I had captured strangers Fiona – 246 and Ni – my next stranger), to the city centre, took me via one of the city centre tattoo shops. Outside the shop I saw Kate taking a cigarette break. She had the hood up on her coat, sheltering from the rain, but I could see that she might make a good stranger.

As I walked towards her, I made eye contact ,nodded and said hello. Kate smiled back and said she Ruby (my little whippet dog) was very cute. So I took Ruby over to met her. Ruby was a little wary of Kate’s cigarette, so Kate put it out.

We had a chat about dogs, Kate owned a couple of dogs.

I asked if Kate was a Tattoo artist at the shop.

“I’m just working on reception” replied Kate “I do piercings, but not at the moment”

“Are you busy”

“We have a steady stream of customers, although we are only open for bookings, we have a couple of free slots later today, I can book you in”

I smiled and declined Kate’s offer.

I then mentioned that I was a street photographer and asked if I could photograph her for my 100 strangers project.

Kate said yes straight away and pulled the hood down on her coat. It revealed a fabulous face tattoo.

“Wow, I like your tattoo, it will look good on the photo”

“Thank you” said Kate.

As I was photographing Kate, I noticed she was shutting here eyes a bit and also looking away from the camera. I asked her to look at the camera and try not to shut her eyes.

“My photographer at my wedding had the same issue with me” said Kate. I moved Kate around a bit asking her to follow my camera

I settled on the shot you see as it includes the “Piercing” sign in the shop, which essentially tells Kate’s story.

I gave Kate a contact card and asked her to email me if she wanted some photos.

If you view large you can see some piercing holes in Kate’s face, so I assume she has some piercing jewellery to compliment her ink.

@sangwann thanks dione, much appreciated

@happypat thanks Pat,I have photographed several strangers with tattoos. I think if someone has distinctive tattoos then they are more than likely to say "yes" to my request to take their photo :) As for me turning up in one ..."Nooooooo" !!!

Well done - always feel to shy to photograph people I don't know :-)

Fascinating! I have never fancied having piercings anywhere except my ear lobes, in truth!! But each to their own, eh? Nice portrait
