This is Barry, who was admiring my Sony A7 dangling around my neck.
So we had a discussion about cameras, lenses and photography. Barry is a Nikon user and has never changed brand.
Barry told me he was from Newark, so I asked Barry what he was doing in Nottingham. Barry told me he was going to John Lewis to look for cutlery.
“Have a look at the geek section too”I told him (that’s TV’s , Camera’s, Radios, Tablets, Speakers, Smart Speakers etc) “Although last time I looked they were desperately short on stock in the camera section”
Barry told me he had just been to London Camera Exchange and they were having difficult getting stock.
I asked Barry what he did prior to his retirement. Barry told me he did some guest lecturing at Nottingham Trent Uni’. When I asked what he taught he told me “Design”. I said “Design” was a very generic subject and asked what area of Design. “Visual Design” was Barry’s reply.
Barry told me he ran a Design Practice in London prior to retiring. He designed The Sunday Times newspaper, working closely with the editors of the various sections. He told me he had worked with Andrew Neil and got on very well with him.
A tram then passed us by and Barry said he loved the design of the latest trams. I agreed that they were rather beautiful. Barry told me whenever he comes to Nottingham, he always ensures he has a ride on a tram.
Barry was pleased to take part in my project, telling me he wasn’t used to having his photo taken. I took some photos (it was a dull grey morning) and gave Barry a card for him to contact me for some photos. I’ve had an email tonight and sent some photos to Barry. I said I might do some Black and White photos of him and Barry said that was good as he liked Black and White.
Thanks for taking part in my Strangers project Barry, I hope you found your cutlery.
Interesting how everyone you report as being unused to having their photo taken or not much liking it, looks at ease and natural. Says a lot about your ability to make people feel comfortable I think.
Barry certainly looks very comfortable (mind you, I bet the mutual geekery fest helped that along in this instance ;-D ). Another well made portrait to add to the portfolio.
Fav for a lovely natural portrait. I have not regained my enthusiasm for stranger portraiture yet but maybe once securely back on my own two feet, I can start again in a small way. Whatever happens I'm grateful for what I've had and to you for introducing me to it, thanks Phil.
