Who even knew what a nightjar was? As part of my walk in the botanical garden this morning this very special find was pointed out to me. Difficult to work out but if you look closely you can see its eyes looking at you! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_owlet-nightjar
Almost cryptic in its nest and wonderful shot! We have the whippoorwill and chuck-will's-widow around here for nightjars. Nice to hear them call in the night when it's cool enough to sleep with the windows open.
Great find and lovely shot. I used to record bird voices for recognition applications and got the result that it is a nightjar. I was very delighted until ornithologists explained to me that his voice is very similar to the voice of a certain species of frog and the application misdiagnosed it.
I would so like to see one.
