simplicity

This flower has appeared on an indoor plant in my friend, Hilary's, living room. The leaves are broad and quite long and the stem is sturdy. She'd love to know what it is. Can anyone help? I thought it looked a bit like the flower of a Welsh onion and might be related but have had no luck with an online search. In anticipation.......
It's a very pretty looking flower, but I don't know what it is! Just looked through my house plant book but couldn't find if I'm afraid.

@darylo

That green below is also on the flower of a Welsh onion which is what made me think it might be connected. But apparently not!

@pyrrhula @khirsch

The flower is not the same as the one in your ref but yes it has a bulb and the leaves are rather like amaryllis leaves. Karin suggests clivia but once again the flower is not right. (My friend has a clivia so knows that).

Love this flower! Hope you can post it when it's fully opened. I think the lines and detail on this are fantastic.
September 13th, 2013
Another suggestion might be one of the amarylis family, considering the stem, broad leaves and a bulb
September 13th, 2013
@khirsch

I'll do a google on that but have never seen a flower like this on an amaryllis - thanks, Karin.

@quietpurplehaze Just had a look and discovered that there is so many different types belonging the amaryllis family I never heard of before
September 13th, 2013
@khirsch

Yes, me too - but I can't find a flower quite like it!!
September 13th, 2013
@pyrrhula @khirsch

I just wonder if this could possibly be the bud of lycoris (member of amaryllis family)

@quietpurplehaze It can be possible , you can see it by the leafs. How they get out the bulb. And at the smell of it .
I`ve Google a bit on Amaryllis . Only found with big flowers
September 13th, 2013
@pyrrhula

You can see them with small flowers in my refs and if this flower is just coming out in my pic, it could be possible I think - puzzle!
September 13th, 2013
What an amazing flower. Good shot
September 14th, 2013
Gorgeous shot!!
September 15th, 2013
We've got one of these in our conservatory but I've no idea what it is. A friend gave it to us and it has only ever flowered once!

My friend has just informed me that Hilliers (local nursery) have identified this flower as a blood lily or haemanthus - more info and pics here if it interest you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haemanthus - thanks for all your interest and ideas (think I'm going to see if my friend can do me a cutting!)

@quietpurplehaze Can you 'grow' a plant from a cutting from a blub? How fabulous; I absolutely do not have green fingers, you must keep us posted Hazel and good luck

@claireuk
I read this on Wikipedia:
'Propagation can be by offsets (adventitious bulblets), leaf cuttings and by germination of seed.' I'll certainly post a pic if I am lucky enough to have a haemanthus.

@quietpurplehaze hi Hazel, I spend my life stealing little snippets off shrubs and plants to grow on. If you get a little packet of RootGrow (£5) available on Ebay, you will almost be guaranteed success. Good luck and hope this helps x x x
