kingfisher

Bird shots are not my strong point but this is one that I was pleased to get on a walk along the River Hamble. (Boxing Day 2010) I love kingfishers but have hardly seen any as they are quick and shy. The only others I've seen were in France. And this photo is a bit, shall we say, impressionistic.....
Well it's a lovely photo, Hazel, even if a bit distant, and they do indeed move very fast and don't exactly come out and pose.

Pretty colours but not what I would have expected for a sea bird!. Cute.

Lovely capture Hazel. Like how the Kingfisher is the only bit of colour in your frame. Would also like to see it cropped.

@creativeamateur This little kingfisher is already cropped to within an inch of its life! Maybe I'll have some kingfisher-luck in France in a couple of weeks.

@doblaine Its habitat is more river, lakes etc. Thanks to you posting a shot of a kingfisher, I now know that there are many more than the orange/blue kind.

Shame, I would love to see one of these little birds close-up, however if they are very timid you did extremely well to get this shot. Good luck in France !

Very clever to catch on of those Hazel, very well done, you must have been so delighted. nice little chap!

@tishpics He (or one like him!) apparently frequents this stretch of the river bank but this is the only time I've seen him in all the walks we've had along there. He did sit still for a little while but was really too far away.

@rosiekind Well that's very kind and thanks, Rosie. I appreciate it particularly from you!

Wonderful find and capture . The dutch name for this bird is : IJsvogel = Ice-bird . Don`t ask me why.

@pyrrhula Thank you. That's interesting - the name - but I can't think why either. I looked in my German dictionary and find it's Eisvogel in German - I've already learnt one new bit of German vocab elsewhere on this site today and now I know my FIRST Dutch word! But will it be very useful, I wonder?!!

@richardcreese

Thanks for taking a look, Richard. This kingfisher sat for ages on the post but I only had a p&s, not much zoom, so the shot is not too good!
