gunnera wigwams
Gunnera Manicata is native to Brazil and in the arboretum the large leaves are cut in autumn and piled into wigwam shapes over the new growth buds to protect them from the English frosts.

Either a seed pod or a flower stalk - it's not clear from my research online when one becomes the other! The images all look the same.
