Gunnera Manicata is native to Brazil and in the arboretum the large leaves are cut in autumn and piled into wigwam shapes over the new growth buds to protect them from the English frosts.
Gunnera is a magnificent plant. I had one once in a small garden ... a serious size mismatch!

I also think a problem with gunnera could be mistaking it for rhubarb!!

@doblaine Either a seed pod or a flower stalk - it's not clear from my research online when one becomes the other! The images all look the same.
