A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
@quietpurplehaze hazel, the light confuses the metering because you have a white swan in bright light on relatively dark water. You can try using the spot metering option on your camera or centre weighted (they mostly default to evaluative). You can also try adjusting your EV by a few increments. It is not easy and i don't think i have a swan in my 365.
Just had a look through my swan shots and I think this is the best, taken with my bargain (!)little Lumix on spot metering. http://365project.org/quietpurplehaze/add-ins/2014-10-20 I did do some processing on it. EV = exposure?
Thanks as ever for helpful comments.
@quietpurplehaze hazel, EV, most cameras let you adjust the EV (Exposure Value) in third or half stops . Essentially you let you camera expose the scene and then you use you knowledge about the scen to make minor adjustments. If you are taking a picture of a person and the person is stood in front of a bright backdrop, then you increase your EV value, because your camera may have metered more of the bright light . similarly if they are stood with a dark backdrop you decrease the EV value http://www.digital-photo-secrets.com/tip/19/exposure-value/

He does look beautiful hazel
I rather like them when they are 'half and half'.
Yes, and I know this is not my best effort, have had much more detail in swan feathers but I found that I could do nothing with it!
