After our walk on Sunday, we stopped off at the bistro in the boatyard at Swanwick for lunch.
Concha came to our table to ask if everything was OK and I discovered that she was the assistant manageress. She told me she was from Valencia; I said that I speak a bit of Spanish. The conversation then became 'mitad ingles, mitad espanol'.
It was agreed I could take her photo but she maintained she was not photogenic. After I'd taken a few shots, she got the two young waiters on duty over to have their photo taken with her.
Concha told me she would like to travel in England. She does a little private individual Spanish tuition and also supports a family with disabled children.
As we parted she asked if I'd like to meet for coffee. I hope we can. I have her email to send her a couple of photos.
What I learnt from this meeting is that I'd like to be a bit better in this situation at dual tasking: in control of the camera settings, framing the shot etc whilst also putting my subject at ease.
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
She is quite photogenic. She has wonderful features. She has high cheek bones, beautiful skin and lovely eyes. I do believe however if the glasses didn't magnify the lines around he eyes. Some glass have a tendency to do that.i might consider when photographing someone with glasses if they might like to try one or two shots without the glasses on. All in all it is a nice portrait. I think you are doing great at this.
Well a new friend now too......this portrait taking is win win win! I think Concha is wonderfully photogenic....., her glasses are the perfect shape for her face! She is perhaps a little lonely in this new country she lives in, I hope you manage to meet up.
Concha, looks lovely, I did think she was Spanish when the image popped up onto my screen. A certain elegance and style. My wife would say "why is the head cropped off" but that a style that works in my opinion. I think this is your best stranger to date Haze, nicely exposed and pin sharp eyes.
One thing I do with the multitasking bit is set my camera up before I approach the stranger. I look at the light and set my ISO accordingly and as I shoot on AV mode I dial in my aperture setting to :)
Thanks for comment, fav, help(as ever!) I do have my camera set up generally for portraits but hadn't reckoned with the dappled but harsh sunlight until I started shooting. Will try to pre-plan more - I also shoot on av. A portrait shot I posted long ago was likened to the work of a famous photographer who 'truncates' his subjects' heads but I've forgotten his name.
