Listening to this service provoked a little conversation between Ray and myself: he would rather be out doing something practical in society (e.g. ambulance car driving), whilst I said that, although I do not profess to be religious, the rhythm of 'monastic' life is somehow appealing; then Ray pointed out the rising time of 5 a.m. which would definitely be hard for me!
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
Still it seems as if the monks don't have too many late nights so that may make the 5AM morning bell more possible to get used to.

What a long busy day these monks have! I loved reading the diary of his day, not for everyone I think!
I went to a convent school & it always fascinated us how the nuns lived. I can remember discussions about where they slept, how short was their hair under the veil, it was always an ongoing subject! A monks life must be peaceful though with not many outside worries. Nice black & white Hazel!
beautiful architecture. I agree with your husband. I feel like they are not reaching out to others, helping them with daily life, introducing them to Christ. They just have their faith and keep to themselves. Of course, I don't know if that is true. I skimmed over the journal entries.
@julie I guess monks feel that prayer is their work. We are not religious and in addition Ray is a doer, a practical person. Writing this comment in reply to yours I have suddenly remembered my mum being of the same mind as Ray.

I noticed too that they don't have commitments late in the day but I think it would be too hard for me to shift my circadian rhythm round that much!
