Cross the road from Winchester City Mill http://365project.org/quietpurplehaze/a-few-more/2014-02-16
and look over the next bridge and you can see the swollen River Itchen but you can't walk along the footpath because it's been claimed by the river.
Most of Winchester is, of course, fine and dry and there were lots of people out on this sunny Sunday. One riverside resident told me that since the ballast was dropped into the Itchen higher up in order to divert the flood waters to the fields around Easton, the level of the river near his house had receded 6 or 7 inches.
If you view large, you might discern people in the distance walking in the water: they must definitely be wearing wellies and I don't know how they got there but I personally wouldn't fancy that.
Oh wow. I love how that building has the french doors that open right onto the river. Is that a business or a private home? Very pretty! The water is pretty too, but can be so dangerous. I ohpe those people were okay.
I'm a bit concerned that I do not give the impression that there is danger here - It does look scary and we could not walk down that footpath as we would usually do but we were perfectly safe.
That's a lot of water, people walking around in this are risking their life, you never know which way the water will go and you can see on your shot that there is a lot of force in the flooding
I heard about the floods in England. Hope everyone is OK. That water looks intimidating. How did you get this shot. It seems like you were standing right in it.
I'm aware that in posting shots of the flooded River Itchen, it's possible to sensationalize the situation. As I've said elsewhere, most of Winchester is unaffected and steps have been taken to divert the flooded river onto country fields. I was standing quite high above the river here on the pavement and behind a bridge looking down on to the water. The houses on the left always have their feet in water. But no, I wouldn't walk in flood water, nor do as we saw others doing which was taking canoes into parts of the river which had been taped off, or walk in wellies through other flooded parts..................
I'm not too sure, think it's private. I should add that these buildings always have their feet in the water! But it's not always this deep.
I'm a bit concerned that I do not give the impression that there is danger here - It does look scary and we could not walk down that footpath as we would usually do but we were perfectly safe.
