one. Right? It just rolls up so you see a few there... Is that what you meant? This is such a great, clear, close up! Was there something "distracting" you cropped out on purpose, just below his rear? If not, can I suggest that if you had left a wee little bit more in the pic under his rear, it would be even better? Just my first impression. I had to fav this because it has this clear and well lit quality but not overly bright like mine always are. I love it.
@espyetta Thanks for such thorough commenting!
You are right about the nature of my question. I suppose the proboscis *could* be rolled up or in a coil outside the mouth. And yes, there's something distracting behind its rear: the Japanese beetle-ravaged remnant of a rose flower. You know how large -- well, small -- skippers are; this one is standing on the green "leaf" that encases a rose bud before it opens. So what's behind this guy is the remnant of the actual flower. It turns out I can crop it differently, but -- gah! -- there's no way to substitute the image without wiping out all comments. (Least, I don't think there is!)
@rhoing You can do some edits and save it on here and not loose your comments, but not recrop ....It is just a small thing and I figured there was a reason you'd done that. I don't know why, but I tend to keep doing custom crop (as I will not do much printing ever and if I do, probably one of those photo books you make online so you can put any shape/size pics you want) and when I do, I end up with square crops on my bug pics..weird. If you were ACE, you could recrop for experimental purposes and post in another album, but alas....
@rhoing btw...I still love this pic! It is soft in the right places, super sharp in the right places, the color tones are lovely, and the light is wonderful! so no worries!

Thank you, everyone! While there are good shots to be taken with a point-and-shoot, some shots just aren't possible without upgraded hardware. I'm quite happy with my 55–250mm lens!
@psychographer Thanks, Lisa! There is definitely something about the eyes!
This is a great shot showing a lot of details.

@digitalrn Me neither, Rick. No one has come to the rescue yet, but perhaps the thing is coiled on the other side of its head? It's another mystery!
