“Step away from the nest and nobody gets hurt.”

Spotted this nest about head-high in a small tree just steps away from one of the two main entrances into the university's Student Recreation Center, past which hundreds of patrons must pass every day. Maybe this mom set up housekeeping during spring break, when there were far fewer patrons passing this tree? I think the tree is a dogwood and I think the bird is a mourning dove (thank you, Carolyn!), but if I'm wrong, I hope someone will correct me!

What a great find, Thom! The bird does look a little wary of you - hope no one bothers it. Love the shadows on the bird!

A lovely clear shot of its eye. Watch out for the attack if you go anywhere near ;o) xx

@psychographer She chose wisely for a nest location. This truly was the best shot I had of her!

@sparkleplenty1 Thanks, Joyce! I think the odds are good for the chicks, if they all survive the heat: triple-digit temps today through Sunday! Never had this in our 29 years here!

Oh isn't she a beauty. Look how peaceful, yet alert she is.

@digitalrn Thanks, Rick. She was very aware of me. Never panicked, but was very, very aware. :)

@lyoungs1023 Thanks, Elizabeth. I'll take credit for spotting the nest, but the image? Neither very creative nor very impressive, but a filler it is not!

She definitely has her eye on you. I like the sunlight on her head and wing.

Great find! I think your bird is a dove, maybe a mourning dove?
