“Shelter-in-place” by rhoing

“Shelter-in-place”

Today we learned a new term for the “times” in which we live. The governor of the Commonwealth issued a “shelter-in-place” order for Boston and some of the surrounding communities. Harvard University was closed. So were MIT and a host of other colleges and universities, both large and small. The T was shut down, cabs weren’t running in Boston and Logan Airport was running but with tighter security.

Since Jenny’s apartment is only a block from a city boundary with Watertown, we were definitely part of the “shelter-in-place” area. So here we hunkered down all day and into the evening, when they finally took into custody the second of the suspects in Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing. So here’s the scene for much of the day: news coverage on the television and laptops running email and social network sites.

Younger daughter Grace was stuck at her apartment in another town into the afternoon until authorities said that people didn’t have to “shelter-in-place” at work. Once people were cleared to return home, Grace joined us here.

It turned out that we were *about 1 mile* (as the crow flies) from the perhaps-now-infamous “boat,” where “Suspect #2” was hiding (about 1½ miles by surface streets).

Such a sad, sad thing Thom. I'm glad that you are your family are OK. Ironically, I receive Runner's World magazine and have just been too busy to read them lately. Yesterday, I sat down to read while I ate lunch and it was the Boston Marathon issue, prepared before the race. It was very sad as I read about all of the hope and excitement for everyone preparing for the race, knowing what I know. Praying for all of those affected and thankful that the suspect has been caught.

You know Thom, as soon as I heard about the bombing., I wondered if you were participating in the run.

@digitalrn I only run in one road race, a small race in Somerville, MA, on Thanksgiving morning! Fortunately, my daughter ran the Boston Marathon last year in that awful heat. I had hoped -- at the time -- that she would heed the organizers' warnings and roll over her registration fee to this year. Although she probably would have arrived at the finish line after the bombing, I'm nevertheless glad she ran it last year…
