Last year we were in New Orleans for her birthday. She rather liked being out-of-town for her birthday, so it worked out this year that we visited our daughters & their guys this year in the Boston area.
Grace made one of Clare's favorite desserts: a frosted spice cake. Sure, it was "just" a "box cake," but as explained before —

— it's less about the cake than the homemade buttercream frosting. Grace made this family recipe for the first time and on her own. It's Clare's mom's recipe and I called Mom at least once in the past for clarification or advice during the preparation. Grace said she was tempted, but in the end she didn't make the call.
Meanwhile, son-in-law Steve grilled flank steak, made some wonderful green beans, key lime pie and homemade black cherry ice cream. It was a fabulous meal, Steve, and cake (and frosting), Grace. Best of all, though, we got to spend it together!
As for the photo, Clare never turns down the beater after the frosting has been scooped out of the mixing bowl. (I wouldn't either!)
