Ripping up a stage

The Varsity Theater in downtown Carbondale was built in 1940. At some point, the balcony was walled off to become its own space, and the main theater was divided into two performance spaces.

Of these three spaces, only one is currently in use. The new Board and president and executive director decided to spend some money and make the "balcony theater" — or "third venue," as some have come to call it — usable space. (That is, spend some money to make money by starting a revenue stream with it!)

Unfortunately, the stage wasn't constructed to support people in a small theater to screen movies. The underlying 2×6s are not sufficient for current requirements, so today we pried up a couple layers of drywall and then the sheets of plywood to expose the underlying structure.

Over the course of the next few weeks, the 2×6s will get 2×12 mates and the plywood put back down and painted and soon our executive director will begin booking singer/songwriters and stand-up acts for this space, as well, perhaps, as the occasional movie screening.
