Hiking the ‘Y’ by rhoing

Hiking the ‘Y’

Today we drove from Richfield to Brigham City, UT, to rejoin Clare's mom and her friend. As "navigator," Clare looked for sites and state parks along the way where we might make a short hike. She found "Hiking the Y" in Provo.

“The most easily recognizable symbol of Brigham Young University is the white, concrete Y that sits on [Y Mountain] the mountain overlooking the city of Provo. The trail to get there climbs 980 feet and is 1.2 miles long. It is a dirt trail with 13 switchbacks, fairly steep, but not too difficult for small children. This hike is fun for the whole family! And the view at the top is well worth the effort to get there!” https://www.utahvalley.com/listing/y-trail/796/

https://utah.com/hiking/provo-trails/y-mountain » “The Y is made of concrete that is whitewashed regularly. A nearby generator is used to light it up during special BYU activities. The block letter is 380 feet high and 180 feet wide, and is said to be the largest collegiate symbol in the United States.”

http://www.hikethey.com/hike-the-y-trail/ » “Distance: 1.1 miles to the top of the Y from the trail head, or 2.2 miles round trip … Elevation Gain: 1074 feet to top of the Y, or 937 feet to the bottom of the Y”.

Worth the stop! I figured I would post a shot from the top, like this one — https://365project.org/sudweeks/365/2007-06-25 — perhaps even a selfie of Clare & me, but this side view of the “Y” provides a better perspective on the sheer size of this hillside-letter/mountain-side marker, including people for a sense of "proportion."
