It was the adapter in the empty compartment at the top on the right: it wouldn’t stay in the socket. So I kept all the hex-base bits and sockets and threw away the tool, the case and the one component at the top. There is no branding on the tool or the case, so this was probably just an inexpensive item Dad picked up somewhere. Maybe he only used the sockets and bits and didn’t use the handle? It only turned 30° per squeeze anyway (advancing a single notch of the 12-point socket).

@danette And “journey” is probably the right word! One of the things I uncovered in the last few days was a [handwritten] letter from my mentor’s wife from 1983. He was overseas at the time and she wrote me to tell me they were excited I got the job here and she wrote that he had always believed in me. It was fun to find that.
