Flying the flag by robz

Flying the flag

About 45% of Tassie is conservation area. The Franklin/Gordon River area is huge and magnificent. The forest contains Huon Pines which are now protected. One is 3000 years old. Debris pines from the logging days are still used for timber - they never rot. Some debris trees have been estimated to be 12000 years old. The waters are black from tannin and produce amazing reflections on a still day - unfortunately this was NOT a still day.
Sounds like you're having a fantastic time - this looks so exhilarating:)

Nice catch- the wake and the way the flag is blowing really make the shot.

Recognised this the moment I saw it. Bet you enjoyed the trip, so good the Franklin was never dammed.

@woofandweft1 Thanks Deborah - not being a boating person I was confused when it was red! :)

@olivetreeann Hi Ann - thanks to 365 I stood there taking multiple shots - each time the flag moved it seemed to be better!! LOL

@golftragic It's a great cruise - so professionally done that I didn't hear a single person complain about the weather! And they showed an excellent video on the way back - all about the men who logged the Huon pine - had some gorgeous shots of the river on a windless day! :)

@photobird Thanks photobird - the red flag was a bit confusing for a while - I didn't know that boats used a red version. As you say though - great for the photo! :)

@robz That's great to hear all that good feedback Rob. I went on that same cruise in the early '80s and had a fabulous time.

@robz Yeah, red ensign for non-military boats and ships. The RAN flies the white ensign, the rest of us the blue version. When I was a kid the red and blue were used inter-changeably by the general public, but some years later that was all sorted out.

@golftragic Now that makes it all very clear - I had no idea what the conventions were - you learn something every day!! Thanks so much for that!
