Every year, at this time of the year, the Senglea Parish Church organises a pilgrimage walk which takes about an hour around the streets of this old city with the ‘miraculous’ statue of Christ Redeemer. Almost 2000 years from the coming to Malta of St Paul, the Maltese Islands are still very Catholic and at least 90% of us are practising Catholics. The image of Christ falling under the cross as modelled in this statue is particularly venerated by the people and many gather from all over the Island to take part in this pilgrimage of prayer. My wife loves to come every year and I do not mind coming with her (it also gives me the opportunity to take pictures of a neighbourhood which I do not visit often). The picture shows the crowd gathering in front of the Senglea Parish Church – which is also a basilica – waiting for the start of the procession. The statue of Christ Redeemer is already on the church parvis.
Many thanks for looking and for your interesting comments on yesterday’s picture. I’m afraid I may have been misinterpreted by some of you on yesterday’s narrative. Actually, Malta was eliminated in the first phase of the contest while now we are in the final stage with 16 nations competing. Much as I love to say ‘Go Malta’ we have been gone for quite some time in this competition.
