In the late afternoon we went to see the Basilica of Superga situated at the top of the hill of the same name.
The Basilica was built from 1717 to 1731 for Victor Amadeus II of Savoy by Filippo Juvarra, to fulfill a vow the duke (and future King of Sardinia) had made during the Battle of Turin. It is also believed that Victor Amadeus wanted the basilica to rest on this hill as a reminder of the power of the Savoy family. Under the church are the tombs of the Savoy family, including most of its members. I wanted to visit the crypt but had not enough time to do so.
The hill at which the Basilica is found is one of the most prominent of the hills which form an amphitheatre around Turin. It was the site of the Superga air disaster of Grande Torino football team in 1949. Torino have never been able to form a formidable team like that of 1949, although they have been a prominent team in Italian football. Behind the Superga Basilica there is a monument to commemorate the dead footballers but I could not visit this site, either, because they had already closed the gates for the day.
Thank you so much for looking and for your wonderful comments on yesterday’s picture. Tomorrow I will give a last break to my vacation narrative to post some shots from Malta.
