One last gate to surmount and then you’re in the city. Three lines of fortifications to go through in a short space of less than a hundred metres, each gate at right angles to the previous. The idea was to surprise the enemy after each gate that he manages to conquer and also to tackle the enemy in small groups as he comes into the little space before the next gate. Bit complicated but intelligent and effective.
I rested the camera on the ground to take this shot. I rather like the tilt of the picture.
This is the Main Gate gate on the landward side of Birgu. It is also known as the Gate of Provence for the same reason as the Gate of Aragon. This gate has the essentialism of military fortification and was one of the latest to be built. A marble tablet celebrates the construction of the fortifications and reminds the visitor of the title "Citta’ Vittoriosa" (victorious city), the city being the base from where The Order of St John resisted the siege by the exceedingly larger Ottoman forces of Soliman the Magnificent until they gave up the attempt and retreated in disgrace. The end of the siege which happened in 1565 is celebrated every year to this day on 8th September.

I'm looking at your daily posts backwards as I am away from home with little time. All your beautiful shots are reminding me of a wonderful holiday I had the year before last in Malta. Fabulous country. Thank you for the memories!
