Our community is built on what used to be a very large Pistachio Orchard called Fiddyment Ranch. Some of our open spaces still have remnants of the old orchards. You can see a photo of one in the middle with the ready to pick pistachios on the left. The right side is the curiosity. There was a small section of the orchard (still in rows intentionally planted), but the trees are enormously tall and the pistachios look “ripe” but they are no bigger than peas...tiny little things. It is hard to believe they could possibly have been commercially useful....way too high to pick and way too small to bother with. That pink covering peels right off. If the shell underneath is split and is not hollow then the nut is probably ready to eat. It can be eaten as is or dried. For storage longer than a week, they need to be dried.
I like the "story" this triptych tells. Great collage! The little ones, really do pique the curiosity. Perhaps when the trees were shorter, they served a decorative purpose.
