Our granddaughter serving to the opposing team. The new coach told the team that she wanted them to serve overhand, which is the most common way. Last year (7th grade) under a different coach they were allowed to serve underhand which most of the girls did. Then as the season start was approaching the coach changed her mind and said they could serve underhand. Now our granddaughter was told she can't serve anymore because she serves underhand. The girls that do serve overhand are few and most aren't consistent in controlling their serves when doing it overhand.
@ankers70 - It has been ongoing all season. The coach says one thing and the next day it's something else. Our daughter was talking to another mother who told her that most of the eight grade girls can't wait to the season to be over.
@dide@randystreat@cdonohoue - The new coach seems to be good at yelling more than encouraging.
Our granddaughter asked the assistant coach if she could offer tips and she said, "practice." So evidently it's up to the girls to learn on their own. Serving must not be a part of their practice time.
@pamalama _ Maybe I am jumping to a conclusion, but I feel that it's all about the coach. Coach seems to want to make a big name for themselves rather than teach or mentor the basics of volleyball. Two days ago my wife and daughter traveled to watch the teams play at a local school. My wife noticed how the other team's coach would offer encouraging words to their players. Our girl's coach is normally screaming if someone makes a mistake. Rarely do you hear any encouragement being offered. Last week the girls played the team that our coach graduated from in a tournament for the championship. Our girls lost and the coach was furious. No high fives or encouragement for coming in second. Why? Because their entire focus was on beating the coach from their alma mater. The coach yells so much I believe the girls are afraid of doing something for which they will feel the wrath of the coach so they hesitate and hold back, therefore they make a lot of very simple mistakes like balls dropping between players.
It is unfortunate, and common to have a coach like this. It is never good for team spirit. The game is suppose to be fun, and winning is a bonus. In my opinion. My daughter had a soft ball coach who was horribly mean, and she didn't last very long. Hopefully enough people speak up, and do something about the situation.
