katy's miniature trinket box by summerfield

katy's miniature trinket box

i remember a time when young girls would have a 'hope' chest. i knew a couple of girls in grade school who at such young ages were already encouraged to fill in their hope chests. blankets, pillowcases, towels, etc. their mothers banned me from their homes when one day i asked the girls "what if you don't get married?" they were the girls who married their first boyfriends right after high school, had kids before they turned twenty-one and looked like fifty-year-olds before they were even twenty-eight.

i remember going to a PTA meeting when my little boy was in grade two. an "old" woman approached me, smiling like she knew me well. she was very pregnant, had a little boy in one arm and holding the hand of a little girl with a bigger girl behind her. she turned out to be the 'muse' of our high school class, the girl all the boys were chasing. she used to have pearly white even teeth, which was far from the rotten teeth and missing tooth she ended up with. in high school we hung around together and i was the 'newsbreaker' to guys when she didn't like them. and that was just six years after graduation. if she didn't tell me her name, i would not have known it was her.

why am i telling you this? for no reason other than i'm making "small talk". i keep forgetting what my mother always told me when i was a little girl: "when you have nothing to say, don't say anything!"

thank you for your kind visits and comments; know that they are greatly appreciated.
This reminds me of the old Disney movie, escape to witch mountain, the girl who didn't talk and had psychic talents. Had a box like this on a strap on her wrist, but with two subs on it, a clue that they were from another world. Childhood was long enough ago it is an alien world too

Pretty little box! Wonderful detail! Interesting trip into your past too! I was one of those girls that had a hope chest! 47 years later I may still have one or two things that was in it too!

Lovely shot. I don't know who Katy is, but I hope her trinkets conjure up memories of life well-lived. Let the blankets and pillowcases come as they may.

Lovely box with that inner glow.....the lighting is superbly done. And, I suspect this is a really small box, even though it appears big in this picture. Love your stories, Vikki! Yes, a hope box or dowry was big where I came from, too.....I said To Hell With It and left for good!! ;-))

@panthora - well, we did away with the darn hope chest, didn't we? good on us!!!!

A hope chest today has an altogether different meaning! I enjoyed your small talk. I think we've all had similar experiences. I'll never forget my first reunion and the class hottie had turned into the class tubby after only three years!

I hadn't thought of those Hope Chests in forever! I was pretty sure I'd marry (didn't we all?) but I didn't plan for it by buying things for a hope chest! I just figured that's what wedding gifts were for! No one told me differently... I knew some girls who received Hope Chests as h.s graduation gifts... I got a set of suitcases. In hindsight, that was just about perfect!

@summerfield I don't always read the stories that come with your shots, but when I do, I really enjoy them. You are quite a storyteller.

I had/have a cedar chest. It wasn't meant to be a hope chest- just a place to put the winter clothes when it was warm out, and the summer clothes in, when it was cold out. And that's what it's always been. Some girls love the dream and romance of a hope chest. That's fine by me. I was happy to have something more practical! Nice shot- great story!
