making the most of the situation by summerfield

making the most of the situation

my apartment building had been on power outage from 8 this morning due to scheduled repairs. somehow (i had a premonition) that i would come home to a dark apartment. it was confirmed when i saw from the bus the two tall buildings (the one next to ours belonging to the same property) all black contrasting the other lit buildings around them. i had gone first to the grocery store to buy a ready-made supper but instead i bought a "just put in the oven" kind of thing. something happened during the day and the repair went on through the evening and the night

there was only one emergency elevator and the fireman was only taking in the elderly. i argued i am 'the elderly' so i managed to go up to my apartment, my dark, cold apartment. i knew i shouldn't open the fridge, but i had to preserve the food i just bought so i quickly opened the freezer and threw the bag in.

i thought i'd just go down again and go to the mall and have something from the food court. but i was tired so i thought i'd just stay. i was told when i arrived that they expected power to be back by 9. i had nothing to eat, even if i open the fridge, there was no way to heat up things and opening a can of soup or tuna is simply out of the question. luckily i have a big loaf of panetone (italian fruit cake) so i had a big slice of that and some bottled water.

no electricity means no internet and since there was nothing else to do, i thought i'd write something. but nothing comes to mind so i set the camera on timer and took this shot. as soon as i turned the camera off, words flowed right out of the pen and i had written about twenty pages in 20 minutes time. i had a small flashlight i use for my photography and a string of tiny fairy lights. by 9:30 i thought i'd go to bed. i woke up at half past midnight with the bedroom light on. my first impulse was to eat something as i was quite hungry but i thought i'd just get back to sleep.

it made me think, if there's no internet and no computer, we would all be having a good night's rest at a decent hour. i wouldn't want that to happen all the time, a few times would do, just to remind us where we came from before this high falootin' technology was invented.
Lovely creative shot and I enjoyed your story too.

good capture despite the lack of modern conveniences; hope you have had a good meal by now and that your lights are back on.

brilliant image, sorry to hear about the outage. I know I couldn't do that, because I can't read my own writing. I like the ingenuity of your lantern.

Love the mystical atmosphere. Thankfully I have a gas stove top and also have a small portable camping cooker so we can alway prepare a hot meal and boil a kettle. Glad that the darkness got your words flowing.

Lovely shot and story. I've always found the same thing when we have power cuts too - it's a good excuse for a good night's sleep!
