tintinnabulation by summerfield

tintinnabulation

i had been wondering for days now, since sunday morning, if maybe finally i might be losing my hearing (or my mind -- well, that i think i lost a long time ago). i was once told that when you hear 'ringing' in your ears (but where else should i hear ringing?) it means you're getting deaf. seriously? this is a very faint ringing that i hear, like metal on metal but very faint. the one thing that baffles me is that i only hear it when i am in the living room or in the kitchen. i had supposed that it could be something of the neighbour's; i am after all in a unit sandwiched between two other units.

it's been driving me crazy so i went out for a walk before i went to my niece's dinner party. no ringing in my ears so it couldn't be me. when i came back late tonight, the ringing has intensified and i was really starting to get aggravated as my left ear is really sensitive to sound. so i looked around the living room. then i realized when i set up the shot for little blue last saturday, i left it and haven't put the clock away. i had the set up on top of my compact deep freezer -- the subtle humming of the motor rocked the unit and the clock being an old fashioned clock, the little hammer on top that bangs on the two domes however subtle and that was the faint ringing sound i've been hearing. so i'm not really losing my hearing or my mind for that matter. the set up then had been promptly taken down and put away.

i first learned the word tintinnabulation when in grade school i recited edgar alan poe's poem "the bells" at a declamation contest. it's one of those words that once you hear or learn it, you just cannot forget it.

tomorrow, i have to make lunch/dinner for a friend. it never stops; i think i've gained a gazillion pounds already from all these lunches and dinners.
new meaning to the phrase jingle bells.

Cute ornament, I have something a little similar.

I have ringing in my ears and yes, I am a bit deaf! To the point that I will probably get hearing aids soon. I'm glad you don't have to!

Thanks for the push (I think), I've started posting but not sure how long I will last ;)

Phew. After sight, losing hearing is my second fear... Nice word, I had never heard it before, and I agree I will never forget it!

I'm so glad you found the source of the sound. Not knowing what is causing a sound can literally dribble you batty. But I knew you weren't losing your mind..smile. Beautiful photo.

How baffling and then you blamed LB!!! Poor LB. But it's good that you're not losing your marbles!

Nice shot. Glad you solved the mystery

My ears started ringing in the early 90’s. I really cannot hear well. I hope to get good hearing aids this spring.

Such a pretty low-key shot.

Glad to hear you aren’t losing it, hearing or mind! Nice to hear the word tintinnabulation again too.

Great word and I'm very glad to hear that you solved your problem. Happy Christmas.

Well of course I had to look up tintinabulation so I could use it correctly at some point in the future, although I don't have the short term memory of a young girl. I was thinking your story was going to be that the sound was from the twinkling Christmas tree lights or perhaps the bells on this ornament. You steered it in another direction (fun). I like this pretty little decoration and especially wonder how you got the checkered bokeh balls.

I look forward to your stories Vicki and this one was well up to standard. Les has tinnitus so I'm familiar with the distress it causes, so good to hear your ears are OK.

there is, unfortunately, a lot of tintinnabulation that goes on in my head. I shall take comfort in the new word to describe it. Im glad that yours was external and temporary. I do hope that you had a good festive season, and thank you for your good wishes to me. I'm hoping to keep up from now on!
