"Day after day alone on a hill
The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still.
But nobody wants to know him
They can see that he's just a fool."
(McCartney/Lennon, from the album "Magical Mystery Tour", 1967)

of all the songs written by paul mccartney, i love this one along with "for no one". it was the first song i learned to play on the guitar when i was in high school. no one liked that song, but i loved it and still do now.
update: interesting day at the boardwalk at lunchtime. people were actually asking me to take their picture, but they didn't ask me how they can get their pics nor did they give me a contact number or e-mail. so i have pictures of strangers i do not know what to do with, but i was taking sneaks at this guy and a blonde woman.
@roth - shhhh! this was a sneak shot. i was taking pics of a blonde woman who was facing the other way, this guy was looking at me. i pretended to take pictures of a seagull between him and the woman. as soon as he looked the other way, click! sneaky, eh! although, yeah! i could call him a fool. there are signs around there that say "do not feed the birds" and he was feeding a seagull. "fool"ish law breaker!
@pamfromcalgary - i would have liked it if he was wearing a clown nose (i had one on me, just in case), but he was giving me the "just try" look. tee-hee! thanks, pam.
@karenann - first time it ever happened. maybe the moon is going off course or the sun, whatever it was, four times people stopped in front of me: "take our picture, please!" and i'm waiting for them to hand me their camera. i normally get the dirty looks, too. thank you, karenann.
I've always loved that song, too! Never learned to play it on my guitar though -- quite talented, aren't you?! The photo is PERFECT for it! And now that song will be singing in my head the rest of the evening (which is totally fine by me!)
@cscecil - awww! thanks so much, CS. talented? maybe, not quite though. i read about something and i think that's easy so i'd try it. over the years acquired some little knowledge on some things. but i can tell you, i do a mean caulking job - clean and seamless and won't go black no matter how long! quite different huh?
@danig - no, no. random guy feeding seagulls and giving me the look. couldn't choose between 'free as a bird' and this. this has more colour so it wins. glad you like it. thanks so much, DG.
wonderful tune. love your story! i am imagining all those people getting home and thinking, oh no- we forgot to give that woman our cards! everyone is in too much of a rush these days to think of details. your photo is a great match for the song. like it a great deal.
@catsmeowb - it is my hope that when i do go back there next week when the weather gets a little decent again, that i would find those people again, except of course if they're indeed not from around here. :-) thanks so much, camille.
love the song (tho Harrison is my favourite Beatles lyricist)...and nice illustration; again, couple of stories behind the song - McCartney has said that it was based on criticisms of the Maharishi because his detractors called him a fool....and thought he was simple because of his giggle ...but in the book "Yesterday", Alistair Taylor, reports a mysterious incident involving a man who inexplicably appeared near him and McCartney during a walk on Primrose Hill and then disappeared again, soon after McCartney and Taylor had conversed about the existence of God - and that this prompted the writing of the song.
